  12. This  program is shareware.  Everybody who really uses it should  register 
  13. this program (see REGISTER.ENG).
  14.  
  15. Do  not  forget  to give your exact FIDO name (the  one  after  the  SYSOP 
  16. statement)  and  your  FIDO  address.  Otherwise,  I  cannot  create  your 
  17. personal KEY.
  18.  
  19. Every registered user will get a KEY. This key allows you to use AVALON as 
  20. a full version and not only as shareware version.
  21.  
  22. The  hottest,  most up-to-date version of AVALON can be requested from  my 
  23. boss (HeadQuarter-BBS) with the Magic "AVALON".  By the way, all AFN nodes 
  24. will  have  the  same  version of AVALON almost  at  the  same  time  (see 
  25. REGISTER.ENG).

  27. If you do not want to filerequest AVALON,  you can receive it by using the 
  28. "normal" postal service.  Updates are free of charge and can be ordered by 
  29. sending a formatted disk and a stamped and addressed envelope.  If you  do 
  30. not  want  to  send disk and envelope,  you can remit  DM  10,-  (European 
  31. Countries and Oversea DM 15,-) for disk,  postage and package.  Please  do 
  32. not forget the keyword "AVALON" on your remittance and your address!

  35. The  shareware  version of AVALON is as "efficient" as the  full  version. 
  36. When a certain date is reached (lookup this date by pressing  <Alternate>-
  37. <I>)  there will be "interruptions" every 5-20 seconds by an  alertbox  on 
  38. the screen;  additionally,  some functions will not work any more. You can 
  39. ask  me for a demokey,  when you want to test AVALON a little bit  longer. 
  40. This demokey allows you to test AVALON for about one month.

  151. AVALON  is  an  alternative  shell to  the  well  known  "Tiny-Shell".  In 
  152. contrast to Tiny-Shell,  AVALON supports up to six different point  setups 
  153. and  as  many different poll  sessions;  furthermore,  file  requests  are 
  154. improved and a little CLI is implemented that allows you to run batchfiles 
  155. within a session setup.

  157. At  the moment,  AVALON works with BINKLEY and SEMPER and because of  that 
  158. evaluates the BINKLEY.CFG or CONFIG.DAT file.

  165. If  you are a registered AVALON user,  you will receive a KEY  for  AVALON 
  166. and AVALON4SEMPER or only for AVALON4SEMPER.  This key is created only for 
  167. you.  Without  this key,  you can use AVALON only as a shareware  version. 
  168. Because of that,  your name (after the SYSOP statement) in the  BINKLEY.1, 
  169. BINKLEY.2, etc. file has to be the same name I used to generate the key.
  170.  
  171. The  key  is very easy to install:  only add one line  to  the  BINKLEY.0, 
  172. BINKLEY.1,  etc.  file or,  if there are no such files, to BINKLEY.CFG; or 
  173. create a file AVALON.KEY (e.g. if you use SEMPER)...
  174.

  189. AVALON works with any version of BINKLEY and SEMPER.
  190. When  SEMPER  is used Avalon reads also the installed paths  and  command-
  191. lines  from CONFIG.DAT.  So you must not install these files in  "Find-1". 
  192. Avalon  sends  Messages to Semper (e.g.  "Rescan Outbound") when  you  are 
  193. using Magix or MultiTOS.

  227. Nearly all functions can be called using shortcuts.  To get an info  about 
  228. which shortcuts are allowed just press HELP.

  231. Iconify (AVALON):
  232. -----------------
  233. When  you are using a multitasking TOS it might be usefull to  switch  off 
  234. the  main  dialog  (iconify).  If you click on the  FULLER  (in  the  main 
  235. dialog)  the  window will be iconified and vice versa.  All  functions  of 
  236. AVALON are available using the menubar or the shortcuts.
  237. When  you  click  on the FULLER in another  window,  the  window  is  only 
  238. centered.

  240.  o windows position will be saved

  243. Iconify (ICFS):
  244. ---------------
  245. When ICFS.PRG is installed you can iconify (nearly) all dialog windows  by 
  246. pressing:  Ctrl+SPACE,  Ctrl+Shift+SPACE,  Ctrl or Shift or Alternate  and 
  247. mouseclick on the CLOSER.

  252. Quit/Cancel/Exit:

  254. You can exit a dialog by pressing ALT-Q or CNTRL-Q.  In most dialogs it is 
  255. also possible to exit using ALT-E, UNDO or ESC! Just try it! ;-)

  258. FidoMessageProtkoll:

  260. Avalon  recognizes the FidoMessageProtocol "(c) Jan Kriesten  and  Stephan

  264. Hidden egg:

  266. When  using MultiTOS or MagiX it is possible to start other  GEM  programs 
  267. parallel  to Avalon.  Just hold down the ALTERNATE key when  starting  the 
  268. other  application.  This feature has been implemented for  some  versions 
  269. now.

  293. The Point Setups
  294. ==========================================================================

  296. First start of AVALON
  297. ---------------------
  298. If you run AVALON the first time,  it will look for the files BINKLEY.0 in 
  299. the  systemfolder (called AVALON).  If these files do  not  exist,  AVALON 
  300. copies  the  current contents of BINKLEY.CFG  to  BINKLEY.0.  The  current 
  301. contents  of BINKLEY.CFG are used for point setup #0.  Note that the  file 
  302. BINKLEY.CFG has to exist!
  303.  
  304. When  SEMPER is used,  only CONFIG.DAT is evaluated.  You must  define  in 
  305. "Special" where Avalon can find this file!
  306.  
  307.  
  308. Working with different point setups (BINKLEY only)
  309. --------------------------------------------------
  310. Every time AVALON is started,  the settings of BINKLEY.0 will be taken  as 
  311. a  "Main  setup",  i.e.  BINKLEY.0 will be  copied  to  BINKLEY.CFG.  (The 
  312. current setup is marked by a hitch in the dialog box and in the menu.)
  313.  
  314. If  you  want to install more setups,  copy your  configuration  files  of 
  315. BINKLEY to BINKLEY.1,  *.2,  etc.  Activate one of these configurations by 
  316. using the buttons "1st", "2nd", etc. in the dialog box or in the menu.
  317.  
  318. Different point setups can be used e.g.
  319.  - if different persons want to use ONE point number
  320.    (-> different SYSOP statements in configurations)
  321.  - if different persons want to use different point numbers
  322.    (-> different SYSOP/ADRESS statements)
  323.  - if one person wants to use different point numbers
  324.    (-> different ADDRESS statements)
  325.  - if you request or poll at different systems
  326.    (-> you may use different BAUD/LOCKBAUD/INIT statements)
  327.  
  328. When  you click on the InfoBox (that displays the active point  setup)  or 
  329. press  F10,  the  active point setup will be reloaded and the  InfoBox  is 
  330. updated with the latest data.  Usually,  you will need this  feature.  But 
  331. there  are  some  utilities which e.g.  replace the  SYSTEM  statement  in 
  332. BINKLEY.CFG  by a randomly chosen text.  This text would not be  displayed 
  333. until you use the "Redraw infobox" feature.

  365. The Poll Sessions
  366. ==========================================================================

  368. To start one of the poll sessions, click on [*** 1 ***], [*** 2 ***], etc.  
  369. The  "Poll Ranking" you configured in the "Session Setup" is  now  started 
  370. and runs with the active point setup. If you want to use one special point 
  371. setup for a poll session, you can enter this in the "Session Setup". After 
  372. this,  starting a session will first install your special point setup,  as 
  373. if you pressed F1, F2, etc. before.
  374.  
  375. Sometimes  it  is useful to start a session at a certain  point  of  time. 
  376. This  can be done by clicking on [A] (AutoPoll),  where you can  specify 
  377. the time the session shall start. Pressing <ESC> aborts this function.
  378.  
  379. Poll sessions can also be run automatically after AVALON was started.  For 
  380. more details on this see "Session Setup".
  381.  
  382. When all selected poll sessions should be started, press the button "Poll-
  383. Sessions" or use "Poll selected" in the menu-bar.

  385. A poll session can be interrupted by holding down "Alternate".

  390. Programs (Find-1 and Find-2)
  391. ==========================================================================

  393. All  necessary  point  programs (and freely  definable  programs)  can  be 
  394. startet directly by clicking on the corresponding button.  Of course, this 
  395. is  only possible if you defined the corresponing programs in  the  dialog 
  396. "Find-1" or "Find-2" before.
  397.  
  398. When  SEMPER is used and no program has ben defined so  far,  Avalon  uses 
  399. the setup defined in CONFIG.DAT.

  404. Program-Manager

  407. It  is  possible to install up to 15 programs.  Just click  twice  on  the 
  408. entry  you  wish  to edit.  Now you can enter  a  name,  path/file  and  a 
  409. commandline for the new program.

  436. The File Request
  437. ==========================================================================

  439. You  can  create  request files (*.REQ) easily  by  using  AVALON's  file-
  440. request  dialog box.  Enter up to 20 files (if needed with passwords)  and 
  441. the node where you want to request the files ("Node:   xxxxx/xxxxx"). This 
  442. configuration is saved by [Save] in the main dialog box.
  443. After  you set files and node,  [Request] in the file-request dialog  will 
  444. create  the request file in your Outbound folder.  If you want to edit  an 
  445. old  request file,  just enter the node number the file request was  aimed 
  446. at and use [Load old request] to load the old request file.
  447.  
  448. If  you want to request a file in zone (or net) different from  your  own, 
  449. you have to save the request by using the button [ZoneReq].  After this, a 
  450. box  will  appear  where  you  can  enter  the  zone  and   domain.   Such 
  451. "international" request files cannot be edited after saving. The  request-
  452. file  can  be found in the Outbound folder;  with the zone number  as  its 
  453. extension (see also INTERNA).
  454.  
  455. To give you an overview over the existing request files,  AVALON shows you 
  456. up  to  10 existing request files at the right margin in the  dialog  box. 
  457. Clicking  on one of them will tell AVALON to load the  specified  request, 
  458. and gives you the possibility to edit it again;  if you click twice on one 
  459. of these buttons, the request will be deleted.
  460.  
  461. Use  the  button [FILES] to request the magic FILES of  the  entered  node 
  462. (which should be its whole filelist).
  463.  
  464. To delete single files, just doubleclick on them. To delete all files, use 
  465. the [CLEAR] button.
  466.  
  467. In  four additional buttons you can enter e.g.  filelists or programs  you 
  468. have  to request regularly.  This configuration is saved by [Save] in  the 
  469. main dialog box.
  470.  
  471. The "Filelist:"-buttons are used,  to speed up entering a always-used node 
  472. number or filelist.  To change doubleclick on it. When you want to use the 
  473. other  filelistes  click on [<123>].  This allows to select  filelists  1-
  474. 9,10-18,19-27.
  475. It  is also possible to install a mailarea instead of a filelist.  If  you 
  476. do so you can select the files you want to request directly from a mail.

  508. Using a filelist
  509. ----------------
  510. If  have problems with your boss because you always request files that  do 
  511. not  exist,  you should request a filelist from  him...  After  that,  use 
  512. AVALON  to  pick out the files from your filelist by clicking  on  [Select 
  513. from  filelist].  A fileselectbox will appear where you tell AVALON  which 
  514. filelist  to load.  This configuration is also saved by the [Save]  button 
  515. in the main dialog box.
  516.  
  517. After selecting the filelist,  the files can be chosen easily by  clicking 
  518. on them.  The slider helps you to go quickly to any line of the  filelist; 
  519. you  can  control  it  by cursor keys,  too.  Press  <Help>  to  get  more 
  520. information  about that.  A double click on a filename will call a  dialog 
  521. box where you can enter a file's password directly.
  522.  
  523. Tired  of scrolling through a 400KB filelist to find the program you  want 
  524. to request?  No problem.  Just choose <F> to search a certain text in  the 
  525. filelist,  and AVALON will do the work for you.  <G> or <N> will  continue 
  526. the search, <ESC> aborts.
  527.  
  528. You can define up to nine different filelist.  To change the buttons there 
  529. are two ways:
  530.  
  531. 1.)  Doubleclick  on a "Filelist:"-button.  Enter titel,  the node  and  a 
  532.      path directly.
  533. 2.)  Click on a free button and click on "Select from filelist".  Now  you 
  534.      can choose a new filelist in the fileselector-box.  To edit the titel 
  535.      of the button (now "? ? ?"), doubleclick it and enter the new titel.

  541. Using a msgbase
  542. ---------------
  543. If there is a mail area on your system where new files are announced,  you 
  544. can install this mail area instead of a filelist. The way you do it is the 
  545. same  as above.  You must only enter the filename of the  msgbase  without 
  546. extension. If you enter an extension (MSG or HDR) it will be cut.
  547.  
  548. When the mails are shown you can use follwing keys:
  549.  
  550.          <,> = Previous/Next mail
  551.          v,^ = Scroll up/down
  552.        ALT+Q = Finish (you can use UNDO as well)
  553.       Ctrl+Q =   "
  554.    Numberkey = Jump to mail
  555.  
  556. To  select  a file click once (the selection is  not  permanent),  if  you 
  557. doubleclick you can change the address you want to request from.  Normally 
  558. the  address is taken from the MSGID,  but when this kludge is missing  or 
  559. wou want to define another requestnode,  you can do it by doubleclick on a 
  560. address.

  580. Hatch files

  583. You  can  hatch files easily by using AVALON.  Just enter  the  file  that 
  584. should  be sent in the "File:" field.  When you click twice in this  field 
  585. you can choose the file using the fileselector.
  586.  
  587. "Node:"  defines  the  destination of the file.  If  you  use  IOSmail  or 
  588. JETmail,  you can use 4D addressing (for more details see  "Special").  If 
  589. you do not enter a sysopname, "Sysop" will be put in TIC-Files and Mails.
  590.  
  591. You can send this file [Normal],  [Crash],  [Hold] or [Direct]. If you are 
  592. a point "Normal" and "Crash" are used normally.
  593.  
  594. If  you  do not want avalon to send the file without  any  notice,  select 
  595. [Netmail],  or  a echmail area [Report 1] and/or [Report 2].  Avalon  will 
  596. create  mails with the description ("Desc:") and the area (where the  file 
  597. should be put in; "Area:").
  598.  
  599. Before  AVALON can create a mail you must define the path and filename  of 
  600. the  msgbase.  To define the area just click twice on the button.  In  the 
  601. dialogbox  you  can define the name of the area as well.  This  name  will 
  602. replace "Report n".
  603.  
  604. You can send a file:
  605.  1.  If  the destination allows you to send "*.TIC" files you  can  switch 
  606.      on  "TIC".  Do not forget to enter the TIC-password for  the  entered 
  607.      filearea.
  608.      When  the file should replace another existing file in the  filearea, 
  609.      enter the file that had to be replaced in "Replaces:".
  610.  2.  The file can be sent along with a netmail (file-attach).  To do  this 
  611.      select [Mail&File].
  612.  3.  If  the  file should be send only (send no tic-file and  do  not  use 
  613.      file-attach) select [None].
  614.  
  615. It  is  very  unconvenient to fill  in  the  destionation-node,  area  and 
  616. password.  So  you  can put these things on  the  "Defaults:"-buttons.  To 
  617. change a button just doubleclick it.
  618.  
  619. Now  you can hatch the file with [Send].  When [TIC] and/or  [Netmail]  is 
  620. selected,  the TIC-file and/or netmail will be created.  All defines  (the 
  621. default-buttons,  the  node  and  password,  [TIC],[Mail&File],[None]  and 
  622. "Rpeort in") will be saved with [Save] in the main-dialog.
  623.  
  624. If  the  file  should  be hatched to a node in  another  zone  or  another 
  625. network, you can do this by pressing [ZoneSend].
  626.  
  627. Avalon  can create 3D- (your fakenet will be used ) or 4D-TIC  files  (see 
  628. "Special").
  629.  
  630. It is possible to put a header in front of the announcement. Just create a 
  631. textfile called "AVALON.HTC" in Avalon's systemfolder.  This text will  be 
  632. put in front of the text Avalon creates (e.g. usefull for banners).

  652. The Session Setup
  653. ==========================================================================

  655. If  you know "Tiny-Shell",  you know the term "Poll Ranking".  It  defines 
  656. in  what order the selected programs are called by the shell.  The box  in 
  657. the  middle  displays  this order.  To insert  a  program,  click  on  the 
  658. corresponding  button.  [Other]  calls  the  fileselector  for  selecting 
  659. additional  utilities  that  were not defined  in  "Find-1"  or  "Find-2". 
  660. Programs  that  can be inserted by a button are marked with an  arrow  (in 
  661. front of the number).  [Del one] deletes the last installed program,  [Del 
  662. all] -- deletes all (how did you know?).
  663.  
  664. [Wait]  is  an option that stops each program after it  has  finished  and 
  665. waits  until a key is pressed.  If you only want this option  for  certain 
  666. programs,  select the [Wait] box (on the right hand of the filename).  The 
  667. you can abort the whole poll session by pressing <ESC>.
  668.  
  669. If  you want to redirect the output of certain programs (only TOS and  TTP 
  670. programs)  to a window,  select the [Redirect] box (on the right  hand  of 
  671. the filename) (see "BIOS redirection" for more details).
  672.

  678. To   run  a  session  automatically  after  AVALON  is   started,   select 
  679. [AutoStart].  The  next  time the shell is  started,  all  sessions  where 
  680. [AutoStart]  has been marked will be started automatically.  If you  press 
  681. "Alternate"   after   starting  AVALON  or  do  you  start   AVALON   with 
  682. "NoAutoStart" in the commandline,  the "AutoStart" sessions will not  been 
  683. processed.  You  can  also  define two timezones.  When  you  do  so,  the 
  684. AutoStartSession  will be processed only in the defined time (if you  have 
  685. defined  a timezone and you want AVALON to start this session  immediatly, 
  686. start  AVALON with the command "Override").  If you set both  fields  free 
  687. the session starts always;  if you enter e.g. "23.00-24.00" the session is 
  688. processed only when you start Avalon between 23.00 and 24.00 o'clock.

  690. You  can select some poll sessions with [Select] who will be started  with 
  691. "Poll selected" or "Poll sessions".

  693. If you want a session to have always the same point setup,  choose one  of 
  694. the buttons [Main setup],  [1st], [2nd], etc. With [No setup] you can undo
  695. these configurations.

  697. A  special  feature  of  AVALON is  its  own  batchinterpreter  (see  "The 
  698. Batchinterpreter").  Batchfiles must be  implemented into the poll  session 
  699. by  [Batch].  The extension *.BAT is pre-configured,  but  no  obligation. 
  700. Implemented batchfiles are shown by a "+" (in front of the number).

  702. A poll session can be startet numerous times by using [Loop] and  entering 
  703. the  number  of loops in the "Loops:" field.  If this field  contains  the

  800. the  same  folder from where AVALON has been started.  Now you can  set  a 
  801. path for each file.

  803. E.g.  when  AVALON  can  be found in the folder E:\FIDO\  and  Binkley  in 
  804. E:\BINKLEY,  you  can set E:\BINKLEY\ or ...\BINKLEY\ for  "BINKLEY.CFG:".

  806. The files BINKLEY.0,  BINKLEY.1, etc. are normaly saved in Avalon's system

  815. small window is already to big for you,  you can select "no icon"; so only

  819. will save the actuall positions when "Save dialogpositions" is selected.

  829. finished,  e.g.  if you select programs by clicking on the buttons in  the 
  830. main dialog box.  Set "Wait for keypress (direct start)" ON if you want to 
  831. use  this  feature.  To redirect the screen output of that  program  to  a 
  832. window switch on "Redirect output (direct start)" (see "BIOS  redirection" 
  833. for more details).

  835. If  you  want  avalon to create 3D-TICs switch  on  "Send  3D-TICs".  Your 
  836. fakenet address will be used in TIC files.

  838. If you define a session as AutoStart-Session (see  "Session-Setup"),  this 
  839. session  will  be started immediatly.  You can supress  this  by  pressing 
  840. Alternate,  or you switch on "Delay AutoStart".  This means that a dialog-
  841. box appears for five seconds before the session will start.  If you  press 
  842. "ESC" the session starts immediatly, any other key aborts. AutoStart delay 
  843. will be disabled when you start AVALON with the command "NoDelay".

  845. Some  TOS-versions  may  redraw dialogboxes twice.  If  you  have  such  a 
  846. version  of TOS,  turn on "Smart redraw".  If you want Avalon to snap  all 
  847. textwindows  turn on "Snap textwindows".  Screen output will be  a  little 
  848. bit faster (but only a little bit)...

  948. areas,  press <Insert> or <Return>;  <INS>/<DEL> inserts/deletes a  single 
  949. entry.  <DEL>  asks  for  "Delete  old  msg  base":  <Cancel>=Do  nothing, 
  950. <No>=remove  entry and do not delete msgbase,  <Delete> remove  entry  and 
  951. delete  msgbase.  [Save] writes the new (D)AREAS.BBS to disk <and it  will 
  952. live happily ever after, until the next headcrash ;-)>.

  954. Note  that  AVALON  is  conscientous;  it reminds you  to  enter  an  area 
  955. completely  with  name and path!  A new *.MSG and *.HDR  file  is  created 
  956. automatically if "MsgBaseChecking" is ON (see also "Special").

  958. When  "Days 0" is defined,  "-DAYS 0" will be saved in AREAS.BBS;  if  the 
  959. entry is free, no "-DAYS" line will be saved for this area.

  1016. for the areafix on your boss system.  All areas defined in AREAS.BBS  (and 
  1017. DAREAS.BBS)  will be shown.  If you click on a area you can announce  this 
  1018. ("+") or not ("-").  When a "*" is shown,  the area will be announced  and 
  1019. added to "(D)AREAS.BBS".
  1020. It  is  possible  to include a file in that area  listing.  This  file  is 
  1021. called  AVALON.LST and contains either the areaname or the  areaname  plus 
  1022. address.  You can use the statement "NODE" or "LINK" to change the default 
  1023. address,  "AREAFIX"  to change the name of the default  areafix  (default: 
  1024. Areafix),  "PASSWORD"  to change the password  (default:  node).  You  can 
  1025. define  a  remark with "REM".  This remark will be shown  in  the  listing

  1305. AVALON   always evaluates BINKLEY.CFG.  This file is created by AVALON  in 
  1306. the  following way:  Depending on the current point setup  BINKLEY.CFG  is 
  1307. copied to BINKLEY.0,  BINKLEY.1,  etc.  If AVALON is started, BINKLEY.0 is 
  1308. copied to BINKLEY.CFG as the main setup.

  1310. The  files  BINKLEY.[0-5]  are always saved to  the  system  directory  of 
  1311. AVALON.  Only  the copy BINKLEY.CFG exists in the directory that has  been 
  1312. defined  in "Special" (or in the AVALON-directory,  if this directory  was

  1450. Avalon.  So  it  is  possible to run  programs  like  Binkley,  that  uses 
  1451. "v_cel_mx/my",  in  Avalon's  window.  GFA-Basic programs  use  (e.g.  for
